The Rappaport Prize at DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park

The Rappaport Foundation, through its Rappaport Prize, recognizes both the achievement and potential of artists who have already demonstrated significant creativity and vision. Established in 2000, the Rappaport Prize reaches out to artistic leaders who have a connection to New England whether as a current or one-time resident, employee, or student in the area.

Decordova MuseumAs a Rappaport Prizewinner, the artist will have already produced artwork of exceptional quality and demonstrated excellence and leadership in their chosen practice. The artist will have also engaged with 21st century aesthetic issues which have had a significant impact on contemporary visual art.

Administered by the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, this annual award of $25,000 is one of the largest public annual awards to an individual in New England.

Investing in Artists and the Community

The Prize is foremost an investment in both an individual and the broader community. For the artist it reflects recognition of his/her abilities, talent, and future promise. For the community it reflects the importance of art to encourage the value of creativity within the region.

By championing contemporary art, the Prize raises the awareness of and appreciation for new media and art forms.  In essence, the Rappaport Foundation seeks to stretch the imagination of the viewer as it encourages the artist to continue in a career of art making.

“Our greatest hope with the Rappaport Prize is to stimulate and advance artistic energy and expression,” states Phyllis Rappaport, the Foundation’s chair.

About the Selection Process:

The Curatorial Staff of DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park select candidates for consideration and also invite ten art professionals to serve as nominators for the Rappaport Prize. Each of these nominators recommends two artists for consideration. After reviewing the artists’ materials and possible studio visits, the DeCordova’s Museum Director and Curators select the Prize winner.

Applications are not accepted for the Prize nor does the Rappaport Foundation influence the decision-making process.

The Prize winner gifts a work of art to the DeCordova Museum’s Permanent Collection. This acquisition helps build the artist’s prominence and makes their work accessible to the museum going community.  For more information about the the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park visit www.decordova.org.
