Pier Paolo Peruzzi, MD, PhD, investigates the role of non-coding RNAs in glioblastoma and stands at the forefront of RNA medicine for this disease. Dr. Peruzzi has a particular interest in exploiting RNA to modulate the tumor epigenetic landscape and its adaptive responses mediating resistance to available therapies. His team conceived a novel platform for RNA interference that overcomes the genetic complexity of cancer cells through precision multi-targeting by functionally diverse subunits. This platform has been used to design potent RNA combinations that can either be used as drugs themselves or to augment the efficacy of existing therapies. A first-in-human clinical trial testing the safety and biological activity of these constructs is underway at Mass General Brigham. Dr. Peruzzi is a principal investigator at the Harvey Cushing Neuro-Oncology Laboratories and an assistant professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in the surgical care of patients with brain tumors, while leading a portfolio of multiple clinical trials investigating biomarkers of drug response, surgical protocols, and experimental therapeutics in patients with glioblastoma. He earned his MD summa cum laude from Università La Sapienza of Rome, Italy, and received neurosurgical training and a PhD in molecular biology at The Ohio State University, where he was mentored by Nino Chiocca, MD, PhD.
