Providing Coaching to Residents of the Boston Housing Authority
EMPath AMP Up Boston
Economic Mobility Pathways (EMPath) is a national non-profit that dramatically improves the lives of people living in poverty. Because creating economic opportunity is multi-faceted, EMPath’s approach is too. They offer a unique combination of direct service, learning exchange, and research and advocacy for what works. The Rappaport Institute has awarded a matched pledge of $1 million to fund the organization’s AMP Up Boston program. AMP Up Boston is a three-year transformative economic mobility coaching program, offered as part of a research study, for residents of the Boston Housing Authority (BHA). The Rappaport Institute’s support will help provide coaching for 266 residents of the BHA, including single mothers. The AMP Up Boston study seeks to understand how EMPath’s economic mentoring program can advance the economic mobility of BHA residents. The program will track income gains, rent payments, savings, debts, and educational attainment of participants in the randomized control trial study. AMP Up Boston is operated by EMPath, with support from the Boston Housing Authority (BHA). EMPath is also partnering with lead researcher Lawrence Katz at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to better understand the program.
